Part II - Network Issues and Patch Update List

Question or Problem

          Answer

Ver 1.52.12 (07/03/09)

Fixed crashing problem for both practice modules.  Now, when student misspells a word, it is spelled out (if the checkbox is checked), then the answer window flashes to signal the student to try again.

Several of my students have the Personal Version of Quiz-n-Spell on their home computers.  Will the word lists that I build using the Network Version work with the Personal Version?

Yes, and Quiz-n-Spell has a feature that will help students facilitate moving lists between the computers at school and their home computers.  It is the "Put List" and "Get List" pair of operations that are accessed through the Admin Utils dialog box.

To "Put" or "Get" a list, start Quiz-n-Spell, click the large 'A', login, then click the "Utils" button.

When the Utils dialog box opens, you will see two buttons, "Get List" and "Put List" at the bottom center of the dialog box.

To Put a word list on a diskette:

Select any word list in the list box, then click the "Set Active List" button to make that list the active list, then click the "Put List" button.  A file save dialog box will open, from which you can select the floppy drive, or another folder, to which to copy the entire list.  All words, definitions, hints, sentences and recorded pronunciation files are copied.  NOTE:  the prompt is NOT copied.

To Get a word list from diskette:

Insert the floppy disk into the computer, start Quiz-n-Spell, click the big 'A', login, then click the "Utils" button, which opens the Utils dialog box.

Click the "Get List" button.  A file save dialog box will open.  Select the floppy disk, then click on the word list folder that you want to get and then click 'OK'.  Do not open the folder or click on individual files.  Quiz-n-Spell will automatically grab all the files in the folder and copy them to your Quiz-n-Spell lists folder.

My students want to build their own lists, and practice on their own.  How can I let them do that without giving them access to my own lists?

Have the Quiz-n-Spell System Administrator enable the "Local" Administrator option.  He/she will run the SBAdmin.exe program, login, and click on the "Add/Remove Instructor" button.

A dialog box will open.  Near the bottom of the dialog will be a check box with the following prompt:

"Is 'Local' Admin valid?"

Make sure that box is checked, then close SBAdmin.exe.

Students will be able to access the files on their local system, but will not have access to any Quiz-n-Spell Instructor directories.
