Bougainville Island is the largest of hundreds of islands that comprise the Notrh Solomons chain of islands. Bougainville Island is both ethnically and geographically seperate from PNG, but under the control of the PNG government.... not something that Bougainville enjoys. The residents of Bougainville feel passionately independent from PNG and there have been movements organized to succeed from PNG. Bloodshed and unrest have been commonplace over this issue. It has been trouble spot in PNG for some time.
